Eastern Painted Turtle
Painted turtles are common in the Adirondacks and there are 3 currently living
here at Up Yonda Farm. These turtles do not bite or snap like the larger
snapping turtles and are sometimes kept as pets. Painted turtles have dark green
or black shells with orange or red markings around the edge. The underside or
plastron of the shell is yellow and painted turtles have yellow markings on
their face and throat. Turtles love to eat worms, insects and small fish.
Common Garter Snake
This reptile is very common in the Adirondacks. Garter Snakes are medium sizes
snakes, but can grow to be up to 48 inches in length. These snakes belong to a
family of snakes known as the Colubrids and give birth to live young unlike
other reptiles, which lay eggs. Garter snakes like to eat frogs, fish, insects
and small rodents.
Red-bellied Snake
These snakes are small and
only grow to about 10 inches in length. Red-bellied snakes are very shy and
therefore are seldom seen. These snakes are mostly red or reddish brown in color
and mainly eat insects, which they find underneath rocks and logs.
