Daffodil
These beautiful yellow and white flowers are grown from bulbs. They begin
blooming in early spring and continue to sprout until early summer. The
individual flowers usually last throughout the spring.
Red Trillium
This plant has three large, smooth symmetrical leaves and the red flower emerges
from between them. These plants like most soil and can be found along the forest
floor. The flowers have three petals and it produces a foul smell, which smells
like rotting meat. This order may not be pleasant to us, but attracts carrion
flies, which pollinate the plants.
Grape Hyacinth
This flower is in the lily family. It has small, ball-like, purple flowers,
which are grown in a tight cluster near the top of its green stem. Grape
Hyacinth are known as aliens, because they did not originate in this area, but
were spread by cultivation.
Japanese Barberry
This thorny bush is an invasive species, which can be seen growing in many
places at Up Yonda Farm. This plant, once used as an ornamental, is very hardy,
difficult to destroy completely and has the ability to spread rapidly.
Dandelion
These plants are thought of as weeds and pop up in the middle of our lawns.
However, these flowers are edible! Some people put the tops of the dandelions on
their salads, while others make wine from them. Dandelions are easy to recognize
because they have yellow flowers with green stems and green, basal shaped
leaves.
